Voting on Minarets in Switzerland

Swiss nationals are voting on whether to ban the building of minarets on the country's mosques.

Muslims make up about 6 percent of Switzerland, where there are currently four minarets. Not quite as many as the army of minaret-missiles on the anti-minaret posters. But, says Ulrich Schlüer of the rightwing Swiss People's party, why wait till you can't see the white cross on the flag for the forest of black minarets?

This either/or, it is draining. But, aesthetically speaking, very cleverly depicted.

Schlüer argues that the minaret has got nothing to do with religion. But, simultaneously, it seems that minarets are the first stage to the introduction of sharia law.

First they build a tower, and then, you see, they ban bacon. Also, FYI, architectural structures conduct forced marriages.

"Forced marriages and other things like cemeteries separating the pure and impure - we don't have that in Switzerland, and we do not want to introduce it."

Oh and Julia Onken believes "mosques are male houses, minarets are male power symbols...the building of minarets is also a visible signal of the state's acceptance of the oppression of women."

I. Well. How logical. Perhaps we need a more extensive ban, to fully eradicate male power symbol architecture?

Maybe the US & other nations should follow Swiss style direct democracy?

The Swiss just voted to ban minarets on mosques and this is a great exercise of their unique form of direct democracy regardless of your views on the subject. But my question is why do the Swiss get to overrule their politicians and parliament and here in the US, we don’t have that right?

Let’s bring Swiss style direct democracy to the United States so Americans can vote on the Wall Street bailouts, government health care, whether to audit or abolish the FED, or require Congress declare war before we invade another country. Read why Switzerland is free and America is not and help restore citizen control over the US government and Congress currently under control of special interests. http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/holland9.1.1.html

The idea that banning minarets has even surfaced is both vile and shocking--but then again, Islamophobia has no bounds. Truly, the limits of a freedom-loving and freedom-touting person is revealed in their fear and racism against Islam and Muslims. This contradiction of banning someone else's free choice under the auspices of secular democracy is just mind-boggling.

Indeed, perhaps all phallocentric architecture should be taken to task and gotten rid of. We could invade cemeteries and smash phallic memorials! Destroy clock towers in the midst of town!

Heh. I wonder what Julia Onken would say to the hordes of feminist vandals. (Tear down those oppressive towers!)

Of course, democracy, that hallowed word...very applaudable. But the notion of the minaret as muslim power symbol, that question-begging description, it is hilarious.

What, then, do you call church spires and sikharas and temples and other rising towers with religious and/or ideological connotations?

We need a world wide campaign to strip symbolism from architecture. Yes. Definitely.
